#tinyefforts2020
In June 2020 I wrote the set of four pieces below. I still don't know how to live with the mix of anger, grief, anxiety, listlessness, uncertainty, cautious hope, and beauty that I'm experiencing and that I see in the world around me right now -- but I'm trying. At the same time, I've been trying to think of small ways to stay in touch with my musical community, support people around me, elevate BIPOC artists, and how to do better in this world. I hope that this tiny project speaks to you, that it resonates with what you've been feeling, too.
Please download and perform these pieces however you like -- in whatever setting, medium, and instrumentation you prefer -- let's make music together, even as we're apart! I've included versions in treble clef, alto clef, and bass clef (all written pitch rather than sounding pitch!), as well as versions with a reduced range where I suspect my flute-based writing might be a hindrance to other instruments, and vocalise versions of "The people could fly" as requested by singers. If an edit would make a passage more playable on your instrument, please let me know.
Most importantly, I want to support you as you make music, especially if you are a BIPOC artist! If you record any of these works (a single piece, multiple, in any order), let me know and I'll use my stimulus check + another $800 from generous anonymous sources to send you $50 ($100 if you're a BIPOC artist) -- up to $2,000 total. (updated July 21, 2020)
You can DM me, email me, @ me, or tag your video on Twitter, Instagram, and/or Facebook with #tinyefforts2020. I'm adding screenshots of my payment receipts to artists on my Instagram stories (highlighted on my profile there), too.
