Ensemble Development through Chorales (2023)
for woodwind quintet
About this collection
This chorale collection is designed to support the sequential development of woodwind quintet ensembles as they establish a cohesive, colorful, and flexible ensemble sound. This project began on a summer evening in Southern Italy, while I was working with my own quintet, Fiati Five, and has expanded over the past decade through adapting many more chorales to suit the needs of my students. I love the range of tonal colors present in an ensemble whose instruments produce sound in five different ways, which is also the principle challenge for each woodwind quintet ensemble as it develops its unique sound.
The collection includes chorales in all major and minor keys, arranged in five sections: more straightforward textures and voicings (Nos. 1-11) unfamiliar voicings (Nos. 12-41); more challenging textures and chromaticism (Nos. 42-64); and incorporation of auxiliary instruments for the upper woodwind players (Nos. 65-82). At the end of the collection, there are indexes to help an ensemble chart their own path through composers, key areas, auxiliary instruments, and voicing of the parts present in the collection, depending on their specific needs and developmental goals. Other possible sequential connection points are noted throughout the collection, and I hope that ensembles find many more ways to progress through these works by creating their own timbral, registral, rhythmic, orchestration, and transposition alterations to these chorales.
